Thanksgiving Trip to Seville

Sophie had a conference in Seville, so we used the occasion to visit the city. The dates are a little approximative due to camera malfunction.

First day: street scenes. We got into the hotel in late afternoon, and spent a couple of hours just walking around. It's a beautiful city, full of orange trees and wonderful architecture.

Second day: El Alcazar. The Alcazar was originally a moorish fort that has been expanded several times. Stylistically it was fascinating because it was constructed by Christian rulers using islamic designs.

The intricacy was breathtaking, as was the good taste.

El Casa de Pilatos. We walked through the city streets to find this house/museum, which was quite beautiful. It was used as a hospital during the civil war.

We were particularly struck by the repeating motifs (of which we probably took a few too many photos).

Street Scenes. Here are a few evening and night shots of Seville, including a couple from inside a church.

The city is decorated everywhere with ceramic tiles.

Street Scenes. Here we really started getting out and about, and you can see more of the city.

Bullfighting (la Corrida) plays an important cultural role in the city, and has for a long time. Bizarrely, the arena is not circular (as you can see quite clearly on Google Maps).

Climbing the Cathedral. The cathedral in Seville is the second-largest in the world, and it is stunningly impressive on the inside. The columns that support the roof are huge, and the ceiling is high. It reminded me of going to a sequoia forest.

Because of poor lighting conditions on the inside, most of the pictures were taken as we climbed the square tower. It is the same square tower you see in many of the other pictures of Seville.

Streets & Gardens. More scenes as we walked about.

MicroBioWorld. Scenes of the conference (sorry for the poor lighting).

The Roman City of Italica. Italica is a ruined Roman city just outside of Seville. You can easily see it on Google Maps.

Street Scenes. More walking though the city, this time through the wonderful city gardens.

Street Scenes. Still more walking around. There was so much to see!
